The Lesbian Flag

There have been several iterations, but the most common one today is the "Sunset Flag." It features shades of orange, white, and pink.

Key Historical Figures

Sappho (c. 630 – c. 570 BC)

A Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. Her poetry expressed deep affection for women, giving us the terms "lesbian" and "sapphic."

Audre Lorde (1934 – 1992)

A self-described "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet." Her work in civil rights and feminism was groundbreaking.

StormΓ© DeLarverie (1920 – 2014)

A butch lesbian performer whose scuffle with police was one of the sparks that ignited the Stonewall Uprising.
